Hello

This is your cheat guide for those panic moments when you cannot remember what to do...

FloRA (Flooring Recognition Algorithm)

A properly taken photograph is key to a succesful outcome.

There are two different ways to take pictures. One for patterned carpets and one for plain and striped carpets.

Always find as clean an area of carpet as possible, free of dirt and grime. Maybe hoover it first, maybe pull back a piece of furniture or go to the corner of the room where it will be less worn.

The photos should only be of the carpet, not your feet, walls, skirting, dog or child.

  1. IN focus

  2. ALWAYS with the Flash on

  3. CORRECT height (10cm for plain and striped; Kneeheight for patterned)

Click on each of the types below to see how a brief video of how you should take a photo of different carpets.

  1. Plain Carpet

  2. Patterned Carpet

  3. Striped Carpet

How do I take the photograph?

It  might seem obvious to some, but, patterned carpets have more than one colour and some sort of pattern. Some people think a single colour carpet with wavy lines or textural differences is patterned.....It isn't.

Rely on your common sense.

This is a patterned carpet

This is a striped carpet

This is a plain carpet

So what are the rules for taking a good photo. This is going to be a recurring theme........

Plain carpets and striped carpets should be taken at 10cm with the FLASH turned on, above a clean as possible and newest looking bit of carpet. These are often found in the corner of the room or under furniture.

This is what a plain carpet looks like in a photo taken from 10cm, with the flash on and in focus.

This is what the same carpet looks like but NOT taken from 10cm. This is hopeless.

Patterned carpets should be taken from knee height with the FLASH turned on, with the main part of the pattern visible. Again, as clean as possible, and the newest looking bit of carpet.

And this shouldn't really need to be repeated but.......in focus as well.
